Walk the Talk

The example of the open-source movement points to the power of co-operation and pooled knowledge

I described in a another blog entry (Geek Manque - 1 October) my acceptance of being a tinkerer - a geek manque. However, at times when I'm not feeling as cynical (realistic?) about myself, I rediscover that dream of blending the roles of venture capitalist and innovator - especially if the innovation uses technology effectively.

Pangloss has long been pre-occupied with Web 2.0 and the 'long tail' which I see, especially the collective and community elements of it, as a rediscovery of the ideas put forward by Eric Raymond in 'The Cathedral & the Bazaar'. This predeliction of ours, to be using new (-ish) technology in our professional lives, has come together in this site, which we've put up in Beta form today.

Like most people exploiting the opportunities of Web 2.0, we're standing on the shoulders of others. In our case, this is true both in the technology we're using, and in the way we aim to garner comments, ideas and wisdom from other people's contributions to the site (enabled by that technology).

We can list some of the people who should be thanked for the technology: the contributors to the GNU/Linux project (our server runs Fedora Core 6); the contributors to the MySQL Community Database and the contributors to the Drupal project (Drupal is a community orientated content management platform - a sort of sophisticated website engine) to name but the most obvious.

But the people whom we can't yet thank are those, hopefully including you, who'll help us build a body of knowledge and opinion about venture capital especially as it affects the UK and Europe. A body of knowledge which, we hope, will make the process of raising and investing venture capital more profitable and enjoyable for investors and entrepreneurs alike.
