Printing in Windows

Set-up

Windows printers are generally plug and play since the launch of Windows XP. However, non-standard printers that don't have drivers included in Windows, may need a custom driver to be loaded before use. Microsoft Knowledge Base has some useful advice on finding drivers.

Troubleshooter

It's worth doing the goofy things first:

  • check the printer is on

  • check the printer cable is attached to PC and printer

Then check the software:

  • click the Start button

  • click Settings (skip to next step if you're using XP)
  • click Printers and Faxes
  • right-click the icon for the printer you're using
  • select Properties
  • click Print Test Page button
If a test page doesn't print then click Troubleshoot and the Windows Printing Troubleshooter will start - follow the instructions.
