Burning CDs and DVDs

Formats

  • CDs and DVs can be used to store music, video or data:

Format Capacity Music Video
CD (audio) 680Mb 80 mins -
CD (192k mp3) 680Mb 400 mins
CD (video MPEG-2) 680Mb - 10-20 mins
DVD 4.7Gb - 120 mins

  • Both CDs and DVDs are available in -R and -RW variants - the latter being re-writable (allegedly up to 1,000 times).
  • To play music in a car or a standard audio CD player, you'll need files in uncompressed format (i.e. *.aiff, *.cda, *.wav) although some of these players can play *.mp3 or one of the other compressed file formats.
  • There will almost certainly be data loss (and therefore some quality loss) if a music track is converted from audio CD format (*.cda) to MP3 (*.mp3) and then back.
