Overview

This howto is about transferring, storing and editing digital photos on computers and other devices.

In digital cameras, including camera phones, photos are stored as files in either internal memory or a removable memory devices.

Background information

File Formats- Photos are normally stored in a digital camera as RAW image files. They are usually converted and transferred in one of three image file formats:

  • TIFF - an uncompressed image file format
  • PNG - a lossless, compressed image format
  • JPEG - a lossy, efficient compressed image format

Storage and Transfer - Cameras and phones can use one of several types of removable memory card. These can be read by USB card readers as well as in the camera or phone itself. Photos can be transferred to computers (or direct to printers) for editing and printing using cable or wireless transfer:
